I would like to express my view and I feel that the question asked is half correct and that’s I will like to explain in my version of understanding.

Thoughts are a continuous process which a person can control but cannot wash out / remove. Its an intangible illusion in our mind which cannot be removed or destroyed.

The same kind of thought in our mind tries to makes a permanent shelter in our memory if we keep on having the same thought again and again.

But if we can manage to cut that thought for a prolong period then that thoughts do not gets shelter in our memory and thus can get relief from its projection in our brain / mind.

Thought was always there and its our realization which create an illusion and we happen to see it on the movie screen in our mind.

In other way of understanding with an example is that there are thousand people gathered in an open space and 500 people out of them are criminals. If a person is asked to keep shaking hands with people there then that person has choice for not shaking hands with criminals by shaking hands with good people only.

So that person has to continuously engage himself shaking hands with good people only again and again so that he do not find time to concentrate with the criminals for shaking hands as there is no way to remove those criminals from the group of people.

Good and bad people will always be there, its we who will decide our companion.

Meditation is the best way to deviate ourselves from a negative thought and keep our engagement with the positive one.

A continuous engagement with positive thoughts is important because negative will definitely try to pour in, but with our positive thoughts we need to depower it.

An example will make it more easy to understand, lets take a post full of water which is positive thoughts. We are happy that the pot is full and so no negative thought can enter in and so a tendency may develop that there is no more need of water to pour in the pot and so we can relax.

Salt ( negative thoughts ) can get easily miscible in the water of the pot and thus can pollute the water. So if there is a continuously pouring of water in the pot then it will always dilute the salty effect and can also keep the pot continuously with good water ( positive toughts ).

NOW COMING BACK TO THE SECOND PART OF THE QUESTION IS, CAN WE WASH OUR PAST KARMA IN ONE LIFETIME WITH BECOMING A MONK.

One should understand that karma is an action that we do in our life. It can be good or bad depending upon its qualification. And meditation is and exercise where we focus our mind to one dot point.

Meditation is a spiritual path for self-realization. Of-course not all can do it, but for common people meditation is an exercise of cutting off from all awareness and focusing on a point.

In meditation we also try to learn how to have control over our 5 sense organs, mainly ear for hearing, tongue for taste, nose for smell, skin for sensation and visuals for eyes thru our mind control.

WE CAN NOT WASH OUR PAST KARMA AS ITS AN ACTION DONE IS OUR PAST LIFE WITH MEDITATION. Let me explain it with example.

Suppose in the past life a native has robbed a huge amount of money from a person, so in this life he cannot wash off that sin by doing meditation because it was a negative action of the past and AN ACTION HAS TO BE COMPENSATED WITH AN ACTION ONLY.

In this life he native need to donate more in his life to compensate the past wrong action of his life or past wrong karma.

Suppose a person has tortured his wife in his past life, then in this life he need to compensate it with love and affectionate and giving much helping service to his wife to balance the past karma.

Suppose a person did not take care of his parent in their old age and left to die without any help in pas life then in present life he need to take care of his parent very well without giving them a chance to speak for anything.

If the native do not have parent then he should go give his service to old people who are in need of it and donate them for their comfort to balance his past karma.

So in a nutshell karma need to balance with karma only in this life and the nature of karma will change from person to person depending upon their past karma.
